Nitrate and Phosphate uptake by immobilized cells of Gloeocapsa gelatinosa

چکیده
The use of algae to treat wastewater has been under investigation for decades. Laboratory experiments were performed to study the growth rate and nitrate and phosphate uptake of free and immobilized cells of saline tolerant, nitrogen fixing cyanobacterium Gloeocapsa gelatinosa. The immobilization was carried out in calcium alginate matrix. The immobilized cells were found to be highly effective in the removal of nutrients. 93% of nitrate was absorbed by immobilized cells within 24 hours whereas algaefree beads and free algal cells absorbed only 46% and 70% respectively. 80% of phosphate was also absorbed by immobilized cells within 24 hours. The results suggest that G. gelatinosa is a promising biological agent for nutrient removal from wastewater. Bioreactors with immobilized cells of this alga could be developed for the removal of nutrients from aquatic system.

Denitrification is a reduction of nitrate by heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria that may ultimately produce molecular nitrogen (N2) through a series of intermediate nitrogen compounds.Vermiculite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral (Mg, Fe+2,Fe+3)3[(Al,Si)4O10](OH)2·4H2O with several layers for bacterial immobilization. The goal of this study was removal of nitrate from water with vermiculi...

Nitrate and phosphate are abundant in urban wastewater. We evaluated the efficiency of nitrate and phosphate removal from wastewater by Scenedesmus obliquus and its use as a medium for Scenedesmus obliquus. Samples were collected from the effluent of central wastewater treatment in Gorgan. This experiment was done by 3 treatments and 6 replications that effluent with 100%, 50% and 0% were dilut...

Background and Objective: Nutrient-rich effluents (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) may lead to algae blooms and many harmful effects in aquatic environments. Micro-algae have been more effective among the various methods used for the removing of nutrients from wastewater. Microalgae Chlorella vulgaris has specific characteristics such as rapid growth, resistant to systems manipulation, simple a...
متن کاملCapability of Chlorella vulgaris to remove nitrate and phosphate at different concentrations and condition: studied by response surface methodology
In order to study the capability of microalgea Chlorella vulgaris in removal of nitrate and phosphate from water, the effects of initial concentration of nitrate and phosphate and photoperiod were investigated in 20 experiments proposed by response surface methodology. The most effective factors in nitrate removal include initial nitrate concentration, photoperiod and interaction of phosphate-p...
